Abstract

We have investigated the effect of hypercholesterolemia on the oxygen—hemoglobin dissociation curve and oxygen—hemoglobin kinetics of rabbits. Hypercholesterolemia was induced with a high-fat diet. The p 50 value of the oxygen dissociation curve was determined before and after the diet and showed no change. Uptake and release rates of oxygen by erythrocytes were also measured before and after a high-cholesterol diet. There was no significant change in the rates following the induction of hypercholesterolemia. Our findings, contrary to those of others, do not show any effect of hypercholesterolemia on hemoglobin—oxygen kinetics in rabbits.
