Abstract

Effect of hydrostatic pressure on the successive P–14M–2M martensitic transformation in Ni 2.14 Mn 0.84 Ga 1.02 has been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to 11 GPa (P, 14M and 2M represent parent, 14M martensite and 2M martensite phases, respectively.). We have found that the P–14M and the 14M–2M martensitic transformation temperatures increase with increasing hydrostatic pressure. The increasing ratios against hydrostatic pressure are about 4.2 K/GPa for the P–14M martensitic transformation and 15.9 K/GPa for the 14M–2M martensitic transformation. When the hydrostatic pressure is higher than 8 GPa, the P–2M martensitic transformation directly occurs instead of the successive P–14M–2M martensitic transformation. The atomic volume changes associated with the P–14M and 14M–2M martensitic transformations are evaluated to be about -0.05 and -0.04% by using the Clausius–Clapeyron equation.
