Abstract
Optimal levels of humidification are as yet undefined, and useful clinical markers of adequate humidification are not available. The possibility that domiciliary inspired air humidification might enhance mucus clearance in patients with bronchiectasis was investigated. Using a radioaerosol technique we measured lung mucociliary clearance before and after 3 h/day for 7 days of domiciliary humidification. Warm air humidification treatment improved lung mucociliary clearance in patients with bronchiectasis. Further clinical trials of humidification therapy are required, coupled with analysis of humidification effects on mucus properties and transport.
