Abstract

Nineteen adult volunteers were given 50 000 units of human fibroblast interferon intradermally and suffered no adverse reactions apart from short-lived stinging and mild erythema persisting at 24 h. When compared with a control, the interferon protected 13 out of 19 volunteers against vaccinia virus, a statistically significant result ( P = 0·012).
