Abstract

The 35Cl and 37Cl nuclear quadrupole resonance frequency, linewidth and line shape have been measured in trans-1,2-dichloroethane at temperatures from 77°K to the melting point. The temperature dependence of the resonance frequency agrees with Bayer's theory. Remarkable increase of the linewidth with rising temperature below the 177°K phase transition is attributed to the slow reorientational motion around the long axis passing through the two chlorine atoms. Fast reorientational motion above the transition is probably accountable in itself for the heat-capacity anomaly.
