Abstract

1. Fractographic analysis reveals the complex structure of boride coatings on steels and makes it possible to suggest a model for the formation of crystals with a branching root system, resulting in high strength of adhesion of the coating to the base metal. 2. This method permits more accurate (by 30–35%) measurements of the thickness of the coating as compared with metallographic analysis and reduces the difficulties and time required for the measurements under plant conditions.
