Abstract

The results of investigations of the structure and properties of carbon nano-onions before and after high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) treatment are presented. The onion structures are retained after HPHT treatment up to 15 GPa and 1450 °C, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The HPHT treatment was shown to increase the hardness and the density of these carbon forms due to the formation of sp3-hybridized carbon atoms.
