Abstract
Hemopure®, a newly developed hemoglobin-based oxygen carrying solution (HBOC-201), is currently undergoing phase II clinical trials in elective surgical patients. Hemopure is a glutaraldehyde-polymerized, stroma free, bovine hemoglobin solution that is administered intravenously. Patients infused with this solution showed highly increased concentrations of plasma hemoglobin as expected. Since plasma hemoglobin may affect the accuracy of many instruments and assays (1), we studied the effect of Hemopure on the performance of commonly used coagulation analyzers.
