Abstract

A field experiment was undertaken during 1989-91 at Gudha Research Farn~, t;ilrnaI in ;I barren alkali soil (initial pH, 10.5). Shoot and root yields of vetiver [Yeteveriazrzanioidc.~ (I..) N;~sli.( wcre significantly lower in the alkali plots compared with gypsum-treated plots. The analysis tilm;!jor and microelcments revealed that most ofthese were relatively more concentrated in ll~c roob than in Ihe shoots. However, K and S were greater in the shoot than in the root. In general, incrcasitlg dosc of gypsum application reduced the Na concentration and enhanced that of Ca, Mg, I(. S, I:c and Mn in 1. the plant. Application of gypsum reduced the pH, electrical conductivity and exchi~ngei~blc N;I olsoil and increased he exchangeable Ca + Mg in all the soil layers up to 45 cm, Ihc cllccl bcing more pronounced in the upper 15 cm soil layer.
