Abstract

ABSTRACT The influence of graphite contents (volume fraction, 0, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, thermal physical properties, and wear properties of SiCp/Al composites prepared by powder metallurgy method for brake disc were investigated. The results show that its mechanical properties were deteriorated by the addition of graphite while its thermal physical and wear properties got improved with increasing of graphite. The fracture mechanism of Grp-SiCp/Al composites is composed of ductile fracture of matrix alloy and brittle fracture of SiCp and Grp. The addition of Grp reduces the wear volume, coefficient of friction and the coefficient of friction fluctuation of the composites. And the wear mechanism of those composites shows single abrasive wear mechanism due to the addition of Grp. As the content of Grp is 6vol%, this SiCp/Al composite possesses optimal comprehensive properties, which is confirmed by finite element simulation that this formula is suitable for brake disc materials.
