Abstract

The total Gamow-Teller (GT) strength in the doubly LS closed-shell nuclei is calculated by the sum-rule technique in the shell model. 2p2h states are admixed to the ground state in first-order perturbation. The deviation of the orbital occupancy from that of the closed shell state is found to produce a considerable amount of GT strength. It is shown, however, that the total GT strength produced gets reduced by about one-half by the proton-neutron correlation effect. From the point of view of the Wigner supermultiplet SU(4) theory, the proton-neutron correlation effect and the tensor-force dominant property of the total GT strength are successfully explained.
