Abstract

A field experiment was conducted for 3 years (1990-91 to 1992-93) to study the effect of different green-manure crops on the yield of barley (Hordeum vulgnre L. sensu lato) grain and maize (Zen tnnys L.) + cowpea [Vigno unguiculntn (L.) Walp.] fodder under rainfed condition. Maximum yield of barley grain wils found after green-manuring with sannhemp (Croinlnrin juncen L.), followed by dhninchn or prickly sesban [Sesbnnia cannnbinn (Retz.) Pers.; Syn. S. nculeni~z Pers.] and was 93 and 73% higher than the yield after fallow. Significant response of N up to 60 and 120 kg Nlha wm found in the grain yield of --Y - barb-: ,and yield of fodder maize + cowpea respectively on sandy soils having very low available nitrogen.
