Abstract

SummaryHydroglucan, a carbohydrate substance derived by Dr. W. J. Nickerson of Rutgers University, from glucan (a component of the yeast cell wall) had previously proven to be an effective oncolytic agent against certain experimental mouse tumors. In the present studies, glucan is shown to be equally effective against the same tumors, and to have no observable toxic effects at tumor-destructive levels. The authors wish to express their gratitude to Dr. Robert F. Light of Standard Brands, Inc., for supplying us with glucan. We thank also Dr. A. J. Donnelly for study of animal tissues, and Mrs. Helen Coley Nauts of New York Cancer Research Institute, for help in obtaining funds toward the support of this work.
