Abstract

A continuous infusion of porcine gastrin preparations, including crude gastrin, gastrin I, or gastrin II, in doses submaximal for gastric acid secretion, stimulated rhythmic antral contractions in the intact stomach or innervated antral pouch of dogs. SC 15396 markedly decreased gastrin-stimulated gastric acid secretion, but had no effect on gastrin-stimulated antral motility. Provided that the endogenous release of gastrin can be shown to produce an effect similar to exogenous gastrin, stimulation of rhythmic antral contractions should be included as one of the physiological actions of gastrin.
