Abstract

The irradiation of aqueous solutions of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) with 6 x 10/sup 5/ rads of Co/sup 60/ gamma -rays principally led to the release of free adenine and to the destruction of ribose. Adenine and the phosphate ester bends were affected to a comparatively minor degree. It was deduced that the primary attack on ATP was at the 1'carbon atom. When free D-ribose was irradiated, several acids with reducing groups were found to be the principal products. It was assumed that these acids could be derived by further oxidation of ribopenturonic acid. The G value was 2.30 for ribose destruction and 1.16 for formation of the carboxyl group. (auth)
