Abstract

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of fluorapatite (FA) nano particles content on biodegradation behavior of a nanocomposite (AZ91-FA) made of AZ91 magnesium alloy as matrix and FA nano particles as reinforcement. Bio-corrosion behavior of prepared AZ91-FA nanocomposites was evaluated. The results showed that the addition of FA nano particles to the AZ91 magnesium alloy as reinforcement can accelerate and promote the formation of calcium magnesium phosphate and calcium carbonate, and in turn provide much better protection for the matrix alloy. The formation of calcium magnesium phosphate on the surface is expected to improved osteoconductivity of the AZ91-FA nanocomposites in the body. The results also showed that AZ91-FA nanocomposites presented increased corrosion resistance compared to the AZ91 magnesium alloy and the corrosion resistance of the AZ91-FA nanocomposites increased with an increase in FA content.
