Abstract

This study examined the effect of fins and hand paddles on the performance times of sprint and endurance front crawl swims. On separate days and randomized order, 6 University competitive swimmers (males, age =17-21 yrs) performed four trials of both 100m and 800m distances using: 1) no equipment(control), 2) fins and hand paddles combined, 3) only fins, and 4) only hand paddles. Prior to testing, subjects underwent a two-weeks program to familiarize with use of conventional fins (Seasub) and hand paddles(Polysport). Swimming was performed in a 25-m indoor pool. Performance times in minutes (mean±SD) were: Table Within distances, the equipament had no effect on HR. The results indicate that these equipments improved the speed only for the 100m trials and this effect was mainly due to the use of fins. For the 800m trials, the weight of the fins may have caused fatigue and removed the ergogenic effect of the equipment.
