Abstract

Poor stability problems, mainly caused by f-CaO, limit the application of steel slag as a supplementary cementitious material. In order to investigate the effect of elemental composition on the hydration activity of f-CaO, synthetic f-CaO was prepared based on the elemental composition of f-CaO in steel slag, hydration experiments were carried out under ambient and boiling conditions, and the effect of the Fe and Mn on the hydration activity of f-CaO was interpreted from the point of view of the electronic structure based on Density functional theory. The results show that the synthetic f-CaO has a low hydration activity, while the changes of Fe and Mn elements affect the hydration activity of the synthetic f-CaO.The analysis of PDOS shows that the doping of both Fe and Mn inhibits the hydration activity of CaO and the inhibition effect of Mn is stronger.
