Abstract
A method was developed to determine the structure of urea-formaldehyde resins using NMR 1H spectra of solutions in D2O. Spectra were obtained of model compounds of linear cyclic structure, model systems and resins of industrial type and the signals were assigned. The formation of monomethylol urea, symmetrical and asymmetrical dimethylol urea, trimethylol urea and hemiformal was observed using spectra at the first stages of condensation in neutral solution and methylene bridges in acid solution. The formation of triazinone rings stabilized by methylol groups at “amine” nitrogen, in urea-formaldehyde resins obtained in the presence of hexamethylene tetramine, was confirmed.
