Abstract

1. Under fixed temperature conditions in an engine, piston fouling with varnish deposits depends on the amount of oil impinging on the parts of the cylinder-piston group. In the PZV unit, the primary parameters governing the amount of oil impinging on the piston are the engine speed and the oil level in the engine crankcase. 2. In evaluating the detergency of additive oils in the PZV unit, it is desirable to run the tests at 980 rpm instead of 2500 rpm, since the lower-speed operation gives a more reliable classification of oils with various additives, eliminates excessive noise in operation of the unit, and lengthens the engine life.
