Abstract

Abstract The effect of processes caused by radiation-enhanced diffusion on mechanical properties of metals is discussed. Experimental results of electron irradiation (E=2,3 MeV) of the alloys Fe-Cr (15 and 20%Cr), Fe–5% Mo, Cu–2.5% Be and cold-worked Ni are given. Irradiation temperature was in the range 20–200°C; irradiation doses in the range up to 5.1018 cm−2. It has been found out that irradiation decreases ultimate tensile strength σl (7–8% for Fe + 20% Cr) and elongation δ (25–15% for Fe + 20% Cr) and increases yield strength σ0.2 (25% for Fe + 20%Cr). This effect is explained by precipitation of σ-phase in Fe-Cr alloys caused by diffusion. Smaller value of radiation effect in the alloy Fe + 15% Cr in comparison with the alloy Fe + 20% Cr and x-ray structural analysis confirm this conclusion. Mechanical properties of the alloy Fe + Mo change due to irradiation similarly. These changes are connected with precipitation of σ-phase. Irradiation of the alloy Cu + 2.5% Be quenched from 800°C changes its m...
