Abstract

SummaryAutorepopulation studies using a radiobiological method provide evidence that endogenous hemopoietic stem cell proliferation in the shielded mouse occurs during the first 5 days after irradiation. Exposure to hypoxia, sufficient to produce elevated levels of endogenous erythropoietin, failed to induce erythroid differentiation during the early proliferative phase of marrow repopulation. The data support the concept that the replication of stem cells, per se, renders them refractory to the induction of erythroid differentiation by erythropoietin.
