Abstract

This study was undertaken in an attempt to shed more light on the phenomenon of the stress-assisted migration of grain boundaries. It was surprisingly found that the imposition of elastic mechanical stresses during static annealing retards recrystallization kinetics. In turn, the preservation of residual stress in the partially recrystallized material diminished the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect during subsequent tensile tests. The observed phenomena were attributed to a decrease in diffusion rate under elastic stress.
