Abstract

The effect of an elastic coupling on the modal characteristics of a spur gearbox system is investigated using two numerical modal analyses such as rigid coupling and elastic coupling based on the second model of Nelson and Crandall and taking into account the effect of incorporating the time varying mesh stiffness. The numerical results of the proposed model are compared with those of Kramer model of coupling and a good correlation of natural frequencies is observed. The distributions of modal kinetic and strain energies are also explored and the influence of using an elastic coupling is highlighted.
