Abstract
AbstractOver the last few decades, researchers have indulged in various renewable energy research fields. Biodiesel is one of the promising fields of interest for its practical usefulness. One of the major drawbacks of use of biodiesel is NOx emission. B10, B20, and B30 of yellow oleander seed oil biodiesel have been fuelled in a single-cylinder water-cooled CRDI engine. Various performance parameters of the engine such as BTE, BSFC, and BMEP have been evaluated at different load conditions at a constant speed of 1500 rpm. There is slight increase of BSFC with increase in the percentage of biodiesel proportion in the fuel. At full load, BSFC for petroleum diesel and B20 is, respectively, 0.38 kg/kWh and 0.44 kg/kWh at a compression ratio of 18. But there is a huge increase in NOx emission from 102 ppm to 656 ppm at full load for petroleum diesel and B20 at the same compression ratio. Use of biodiesel reduces the emission of CO and UHC. The NOx emission may be cut down with the use of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. A 15% use of EGR notably drops down the NOx emission to 170 ppm. Although EGR can reduce down the NOx emission, the price is increased BSFC, reduced BTE and slight increase in CO and UHC.KeywordsEmissionBiodieselEGRNOx
