Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of edaravone on the serum S100-B protein levels in patients with off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery and its mechanism. Methods Thirty patients treated by off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery were randomly divided into experimental group (n =15) and control group (n =15).Patients in experimental group were given edaravone 0.5 mg / kg at 5 min after induction of anesthesia, intravenous infusion and another 0.5 mg / kg added into cardiopulmonary bypass machine at 5 min before aortic opening; Patients in control group were not given edaravone.Jugular venous blood were collected and the serum levels of edaravone were detected at 5 min after induction of anesthesia(T1),5 min after the opening of aorta (T2),1 h (T3),2 h (T4),6 h (TS) and 24 h (T6) after surgery. Results The serum levels of S100-B at T2 ~T5 were higher than those in T1 time period(P <0.01) ; The serum levels of S100-B in experimental group at T2 ~T5 were lower than those in control group(P <0.05 or 0.01).Conclusions Edaravone can reduce the brain injury of patients with coronary artery bypass surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB),its mechanism may be related to through blood-brain barrier, effectively scavenge free radicals and inhibit lipid peroxidation, inhibition of brain cells over oxidation, reduce cerebral ischemia and cerebral ischemia-induced brain edema.
