Abstract

The formation of gratings in glass by the ion exchange technique is analyzed. The ion exchange is modeled, and the effect of diffusion nonlinearity and the external electric field on the diffusant concentration profile and diffraction characteristics of gratings are studied. It is shown that the character of diffusion nonlinearity has a substantial effect on the diffraction efficiency of the gratings produced by thermal ion exchange. It is also shown that the diffraction efficiency can be considerably increased by using an external electric field.
