Abstract

One way in which regular consumption of dietary fibre could be related to the eventual development of coronary and other atherosclerotic disease is via the plasma·total or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Short-term human experiments under a variety of conditions have shown that wheat fibre does not affect plasma total cholesterol. However pectin and guar gum lower plasma cholesterol in man. Other viscous types of ‘dietary fibre’ and vegetable foods rich in pectin would repay similar investigation. There is clearly a dissociation between the effects of different types of dietary fibre on plasma lipids and on colonic function.
