Abstract

Abstract Juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (mean total length, 44 mm) were killed by an overdose of tricaine (MS-222) or quinaldine sulfate, or by a blow to the head. Comparisons of whole-body concentrations of Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ were made among fish killed by the different methods. The sodium concentration in fish killed with quinaldine sulfate was significantly lower than that in fish killed by the other methods. There were no significant differences in the concentrations of the other cations among treatments.
