Rice is the most widely consumed staple food over 50% of the human population in the world mainly the Asian and African continents (FAO 2008; Rehmani et al 2014). It has been reported that rice can fulfil 21% and 15% of global energy and protein requirements, respectively (Depar et al 2011). Global consumption of rice slightly increased over the last several years (Abdullah et al 2006). In Sri Lanka, 40 % of arable land is under paddy cultivation.
