Abstract

This paper presents properties and characterizations of different Erbium-Ytterbium doped fiber (EYDF) lengths in Brillouin Erbium-Ytterbium Doped Fiber Laser (BEYDFL) system. BEYDFL systems have the potential to become multi-channel source in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system. BEYDFL is a unique laser source that can produces multiple channels simultaneously with dense and constant channel line spacing of about 0.08 nm. This system utilizes both linear and nonlinear gain from EYDF (8 m and 12 m lengths) and an 7 km single mode fiber. The 12 m EYDF is pumped with 100 mW 1058 nm laser diode to generate 30 lines with a total peak power of 4.5 mW at a Brillouin pump power of −2 dBm at wavelength of 1565 nm. The BEYDFL with 12 m EYDF generates more lines but the BEYDFL with 8 m EYDF shows a wider operating tuning range.
