Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency of four anesthetic agents, tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222), clove oil, 7 ketamine, and tobacco extract on juvenile rainbow trout. Also, changes of blood indices were evaluated at optimum doses of four anesthetic agents. Basal effective concentrations determined were 40 mg L−1 (induction, 111 ± 16 s and recovery time, 246 ± 36 s) for clove oil, 150 mg L−1 (induction, 287 ± 59 and recovery time, 358 ± 75 s) for MS-222, 1 mg L−1 (induction, 178 ± 38 and recovery time, 264 ± 57 s) for ketamine, and 30 mg L−1 (induction, 134 ± 22 and recovery time, 285 ± 42 s) for tobacco. According to our results, significant changes in hematological parameters including white blood cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), hematocrit (Ht), and hemoglobin (Hb) were found between four anesthetics agents. Also, significant differences were observed in some plasma parameters including cortical, glucose, and lactate between experimental treatments. Induction and recovery times for juvenile Oncorhynchus mykiss anesthetized with anesthetic agents were dose-dependent.
