Abstract

This paper deals with the problem of the determination of wave length and wave height on a current with an irregular velocity profile over water depth, mainly from the viewpoint of practical application. The cases of a depth linear shear current and a linear surface shear jet are discussed. The dispersion relation and relationships for wave length and wave height can be obtained analytically. Comparison of the relevant approximate solution found by the method of the approximate dispersion relationship shows that approximate relationships may be applied for a practical calculation with satisfactory accuracy. Comparison of the expression of stopping velocity of the opposite current found by an approximate method with the experimental data shows satisfactory agreement.
