Abstract
The influence of the deflection rate on the energy released during unstable crack growth is studied on precracked specimens in bending; crack arrest is not possible as the input energy increases monotically with time. The recoverable energy W ∗ is defined as that in excess of the energy dissipated by failure. This assumption fits well with high crack speeds in ceramic specimens where the recoverable energy W ∗ can be measured by application of the Impulse Measuring Technique (IMT). Discussed in detail are many of the test results.
