Abstract

Pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coating is deposited on IG‐110 nuclear graphite to protect it against the impregnation of molten Flinak salt. Raman spectroscopy, near‐edge X‐ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are used to investigate the effect of defects induced by 12C+ ion irradiation on the fluorination of PyC coating in Flinak salt. Results show evidence for the formation of CF bond. And the defects induced by ion irradiation facilitate the fluorination of PyC coating in Flinak salt.
