Abstract

Abstract The paper explores the potential of Choline Chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (DES) to enhance the performance of drilling fluids. While Choline Chloride-based DES can have positive effects such as reducing fluid loss and improving fluid viscosity, it can also pose significant risks to human health and the environment and negatively impact fluid rheology and filtration properties. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider the potential effects of Choline Chloride-based DES on drilling fluid performance before incorporating it into drilling operations. The paper provides a thorough literature analysis and gives insight into the present level of knowledge on Choline Chloride-based DES and its impact on drilling fluid performance. The CG13 DES provides the best results among all the Choline Chloride-based DES used. Despite DES economic concerns, the experimental works show that they are potentially good candidates as water-based mud additives.
