Abstract

Smooth, notched and precracked specimens were fatigued in rotating bending at elevated temperature. A comparison of the fatigue limit at 375°C with that at room temperature indicates that the fatigue strength is enhanced by the rapid strain ageing occurring during fatigue at 375°C. While the increase in the crack initiation fatigue limit of smooth and notched specimens were about 24% and 28% respectively, the increase in the crack propagation fatigue limit of notched specimen was about 56%. The notch root radius at the branch point at 375°C becomes about two times that at room temperature. The increase in the fatigue limit of precracked specimen which contains a crack of 0.15 to 1.4 mm length is 40 to 110%. It is concluded that the rapid strain ageing has a greater influence on the critical stress for crack propagation and on the threshold stress intensity factor than on the critical stress for crack initiation.
