Abstract

An experimental investigation was performed to study the effect on the mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of the butyl rubber. The mechanical properties of butyl rubber 727 were investigated under the curing time from 35 to 200 min, respectively. The storage modulus E′ and loss modulus E″ and loss tangent (tan δ) were evaluated over samples cured for different times at 150°C by dynamic mechanical tests at temperatures between −65°C and 60°C. Results suggest that with increasing curing time, the tensile modulus M100 and M300 rapidly increased and then decreased; however, the elongation at break first decreased, then increased; the glass transition temperature was almost no change. Poor performance of the butyl rubber was in the condition of under-cure, so it should be avoided in tyre application.
