Abstract

Objective To investigate effect of curcumin on morphology of gastric parietal cells in rats with water-immersion restraint stress (WRS). Methods Sixty SD rats were randomly divided into 3 groups:the curcumin experimental group, the control group and the blank group. In the experimental group, rats were gavaged with 0.5% curcumin solution twice a day for a duration of 7 days. The other 2 groups were garaged with physiologic saline solution. The stress ulcer (SU) rat model was developed with the WRS method. After the rats were sacrificed, H~+/K~+-ATPase of gastric parietal cells was labeled with fluoroimmunoassay, and changes in morphology of gastric parietal cells were observed, categorized and counted with fluorescence microscope and confocal laser scanning microscope for the 3 groups. Results The number of hemorrhagic foci in gastric mucosa and the number of ulcer for the cureumin experimental group were all significantly lower than those of the control group (P <0.05), and the number of secreting parietal cells for the experimental group was also significantly lower than that of the control group (P <0.05). Conclusions Curcumin could decrease the number of secreting parietal cells and prevent the occurrence of gastric stress ulcer. Key words: Curcumin; Water-immersion restraint stress; Stress ulcer; Gastric parietal cells; Fluoroimmunoassay
