Abstract

. During 2008, the pond surfacededicated to its semi-intensive culture in Mex-ico was 71,611 ha, which yielded close to 132,414 tons (CESA 2008).Among the wide variety of bioactive com-pounds used in shrimp culture, copper sulfateis commonly used in Mexican shrimp farms tocontrol macroalgae and bivalve growth (Lyle-Fritch et al. 2006).Copper is essential for normal growth anddevelopment (Li et al. 2007). However, mostMexican shrimp farms use low water exchangerates (Miranda et al. 2009), which may resultin high concentrations of dissolved Cu andin its accumulation in the farm sediments.
