Abstract

The effect of the Cu addition on the ( α 1+ α 2) miscibility gap of the Al–Zn binary system was studied by using diffusion couple technique. The Zn concentrations in both α 1 and α 2 phases are decreased due to the small addition of Cu, and the Cu element is enriched in the α 2 phase, resulting in both α 1/( α 1+ α 2) and ( α 1+ α 2)/ α 2 phase boundaries of the miscibility gap shifting to the Al-rich corner in the Al–Zn–Cu ternary system.
