Abstract

The effect of cryogenic treatment on corrosion behavior of Friction Stir Processed (FSPed) Magnesium alloy AZ91 is investigated. FSPed samples are treated by Deep Cryogenic Treatment (DCT) and the NaCl immersion test is conducted to study the corrosion behavior of AZ91 alloy. The immersion test results confirmed that the corrosion resistance of cryogenically treated FSPed AZ91 Mg alloy samples is improved to a greater extent as compared to that of an as-received AZ91 alloy sample and FSPed AZ91 Mg alloy samples. The corrosion resistance of AZ91 Mg alloy and its mechanical properties are mainly improved due to the scattering of particles with DCT. The structure of the as-received AZ91 alloy changed from disorderly solid solution to orderly solid solution after DCT.
