Abstract

In this paper, the effect of crease orientation on the crease–wrinkle interaction was studied by geometrically nonlinear postbuckling analyses. A square membrane configuration with a single crease was modeled using thin shell elements and the mesh was seeded with semirandom geometrical imperfection to instigate the out-of-plane deformation. The analysis proceeded by initially providing a realistic deployed state of a creased membrane. Then an uneven corner loading was applied to introduce wrinkling. The effect of the various crease orientation on the fine-scale detail of the local and global wrinkle development was systematically investigated. The effect of seams on wrinkle deformation was also studied briefly.
