Abstract

Abstract Effect of covalent element of Boron (B) on magnetic properties such as exchange interaction and magnetic moment was studied for the simple ferrimagnet of Fe 0.4 Gd 0.6 binary amorphous alloy. In terms of molecular field analysis, the Fe magnetic moment decreases rapidly down to a half value by the introduction of 10 at% of B and the 2p electrons of B is considered to combine mainly with the 3d electrons of Fe. Further, the analysis reveals that the introduction of B causes the enhancement of J Fe–Gd by a factor of 2 and the reason for this can be attributed to the covalent bonding between B and Fe.
