Abstract

The biggest concern of environment degradation due to automotive exhaust emissions is a key factor in the evolution of newer after treatment technologies. Government and legislative bodies have tightened the emission norms in order to control the emissions which includes NOx, CO, HC and Soot. In order to control NOx emissions from engines, various techniques such as retarded injection timing, SCR, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) etc. have been tried. EGR proves to be an effectual technique of reducing NOx levels and is used in most gasoline and diesel engines. Exhaust gas recirculation can reduce the NOx emission considerably, specifically when EGR cooler is used. In this work, effect of various temperature of cooled EGR on the performance and emission characteristics with diesel and Diesel-Karanja bio-diesel blend (80%-20%) are studied. An additional cooling circuit used to control and vary the inlet temperature of coolant flowing through the EGR cooler and a research ECU is used to control the EGR rate. For both diesel and biodiesel blends, as the EGR coolant temperature decreases PM level reduces and is found to be minimum with 15% EGR and 20℃ EGR coolant inlet temperature. However, it increases HC emissions and has no any significant effect on NO emissions.
