Abstract

As an alternative to rapid solidification processing, deformation processing offers new opportunities for the synthesis and modification of metastable phases. In one example, the crystallization behavior of amorphous Al-alloys can be modified by cold-rolling of melt-spun ribbons. An examination of cold-rolled Al 88 Y 7 Fe 5 ribbons highlights the effect of rolling on the as-spun alloy as well as on the crystallization behavior during annealing. TEM-based particle size distribution measurements are used in conjunction with DSC measurements as a first step to analyze the deformation influence on the crystallization kinetics.
