Abstract

The effect of colchicine on the cell population in Diphyllobothrium dendriticum plerocercoids has been investigated by a microphotometric and an autoradiographic method. During incubation in colchicine the cell population in the S phase decreases considerably, indicating that the cells are prevented from entering this phase. Plerocercoids which were incubated in colchicine for 10 h were unable to incorporate 3H-thymidine, i.e. to synthesize DNA. Colchicine does not influence the entry of cells into the G2 phase and mitosis but arrests cells in metaphase. The colchicine-induced inhibitory effect on the early stage of S phase is discussed.
