Abstract

Effects of coefficients of restitution (COR) on the particle fate are evaluated numerically using Ansys Fluent. Two applications namely shot peening and cold spray are selected and particle velocities and spatial distribution at a certain distance are computed. Gas flow is computed based on the Navier-Stokes equation and then particles are injected into the gas flow to calculate the interaction between the gas flow and the particles. CORs are varied for both normal and tangential components to create a parametric study matrix. The variation of COR plays important role in the shot peening process but a minor role in the cold spray process from the analysis of the particle dynamics in the simulation.
