Abstract

The effect of co-administration of chloroquine and cefuroxime on kidney function of albino Wistar rats was undertaken. The levels of serum electrolytes, bilirubin, urea and creatinine were assessed. Histology of kidney was also investigated. Data obtained were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods such as SPSS statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results were considered significant at (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the levels of sodium (Na + ), and potassium (K + ), in all the treated groups. There was a significant increase in chloride (Cl - ) concentration compared with control. Bicarbonate (HCO - 3) concentration decreased significantly in all the treated groups. There was no significant difference in uric acid concentration when compared with control. Total bilirubin concentration increased significantly (P<0.05) in all treated groups while there was no significant difference in direct bilirubin and urea concentrations respectively. Creatinine concentration increased significantly (P<0.05) in the groups treated with chloroquine and cefuroxime respectively. Comparing the photomicrographs of kidney tissues co-treated with chloroquine and cefuroxime to those treated with chloroquine alone, cefuroxime appear to ameliorate the effects of chloroquine on the tissue. This study shows that it is more beneficial to administer chloroquine together with cefuroxime as the toxic effect of chloroquine appears to be reduced by cefuroxime.
