Abstract

Among the cast Aluminum alloys, Al-Si alloy (LM6 or AlSi12) is one of the most important casting alloy because of its excellent casting characteristics. Al-Si alloy is fabricated by Powder metallurgy process and taken its properties are taken as reference. Properties were studied with Al-Si alloy as the matrix and by varying different types of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcement with 0.5 weight percentage. Sample specimens were prepared according to ASTM B 925-08 standard and specimens were tested for Hardness. The presence of CNTs in the alloys briefs us a significant improvement over the pure LM6 alloy. An attempt has been made to investigate thermal stability using thermo-gravimetric analysis of the fabricated composites ranging from room temperature to 1200°C, which again shows us the stability enhancement due to the presence of CNTs over pure LM6 alloy.
